A Cold, Dry Wind
Winter rains are slow this year. Each week the promise of a front coming down from the Gulf of Alaska and dumping some snow up north and rain on our pasture evaporates like a drop of water on a hot griddle. Our pasture looks poorly, we've had to start watering all of the trees we planted during the time we can usually slack off and let the rain take care of them. The hillsides around us are still brown instead of turning a bright green. It's good for drying out our laundry, we can hang out jeans on the line and they're dry in only a couple hours.

When we invaded Iraq I stopped using my gas dryer to dry clothes. We live in a neighborhood where people have aspirations and big houses and my clothes lines are pretty much a protest that shows where my heart lies. Every soldier and member of the military overseas has my heartfelt support and thanks for doing a hard and dangerous job but I know that one reason we're over there is that they are fighting to give big oil companies and the US Government power over huge oil reserves underneath that country. I figure anything I can do to reduce the amount of energy I use might get that war over a little sooner and every day as I hang out towels and shirts and pants I think maybe that is one small bit of getting the military home sooner.

The soldier in Iraq who bought a DVD to learn about keeping chickens wrote " I received my video and I'm so impressed with it, there was a lot of useful information that I can't wait to put to good use when I get back home. As far as the bumper sticker is concerned you send it to my wife for me, I know that she would be happy to put it on her car."

I'm sending his wife a bumper sticker. I wish I could do more.
