At six weeks we moved them from their brooder
into the hen yard, putting them into the much ignored chick-n-barn
that I installed two new roosts into. They were so happy to
be out of that crowded brooder, there was no stress at all.
Fortunately we've had a very mild fall here and they have adapted
well. Though the ground is covered with leaves and bits of straw,
the chicks were dust bathing within a half-hour of being moved.
Amazing how instinct works.
They are still very friendly and rush anyone who enters the
yard, jumping onto your feet and if given a chance onto your
hands if you have something good to eat.
Last night I sold six of them to a friend whose flock is getting
older, I still have six or seven that I will need to find a
home for. They can all fit in the barn comfortably but by the
time they are laying they would be crowded in there. Of course,
it would be warmer, too. ;-)
